What we did on summer vacation: Not-bummer-summer list update #2

August 05, 2015

Farmer's market: We're regulars at the Farmer's Fare market in East Beach and we visited the Olde Towne Portsmouth market for the first time this summer, but our favorite farmers market that we've visited has to be Morris Farm Market in NE North Carolina, on the way to OBX. It's huge and rambly and you can browse there for hours, the perfect place to spend an afternoon while you wait for your rental to be ready (and they have their own bar, which James likes)

New thrift store: We have overachieved on this goal by visiting a TON of new thrift stores this summer. The DAV in Newport News and Family Thrift in Hampton were probably our faves.

Cinema Cafe: We've been to the Pembroke Meadows theater several times this summer. Cinema Cafe, tu es bella con la papaya! And Anouk loves your strawberry ice cream!

Read 100 books: We accomplished this goal by reading everywhere: over breakfast, in the dr.'s office waiting room, and under the shady trees in our yard. A post on some of our favorite books coming soon.

Roast marshmallows: Have you ever tried lemon meringue s'mores? Graham crackers, lemon curd, marshmallow. You should.

Watch Star Wars: We tried watching Return of the Jedi and the original but neither could usurp A.'s love of My Little Pony (or even hold her attention for very long, not even Ewoks). Maybe one day! She still loves playing with her "life savers" left over from May the Fourth, though.

Food truck feast: We wrote about our visit to The Hub here. Yum!

Play putt-putt: We hit up Jungle Golf at the Oceanfront a few weekends ago and it was miserably hot, humid, and crowded but A. had a blast so we're calling it a success.

New splash park: We were the ONLY people at the Portsmouth City splash park one hot weekend day which was hard to believe, because it's awesome and free! IMPORTANT NOTE: there is no shade and nowhere to sit while the kids play. Bring your umbrellas and lawn chairs!

Donate to the food bank: The Foodbank of Southeastern VA is experiencing a real shortage of donations right now so this was a timely one. Read more here.
